Canada Sees Increase In International Students Becoming Permanent Residents

Statistics released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reveal that the number of international students being granted permanent residence is growing.
Figures show 8,565 former international students became permanent residents in 2005, compared to 19,330 in the first three quarters of 2023.

A new report from the auditor general of Canada released Thursday warns that while progress has been made, the federal government must improve its management of immigration programs to reduce permanent residency backlogs.

Health ministers from across the country wrapped up two days of meetings in Charlottetown Thursday and their federal counterpart says he is taking five "concrete" priorities home to Ottawa as a result of it.
Federal Health Minister Mark Holland listed those items in a communique after groups representing doctors and nurses demanded the ministers leave the gathering "with a clear commitment to urgent action."
